‘Inspire us all’

Township Tornadoes basketball team continues to dominate

The New Jersey Special Olympics Washington Township Tornadoes Basketball Team clinched double gold in regional and state competitions this year, cementing their “legacy as champions.”

The team and its coaches – including Ron Williams, who founded the township Parks and Recreation Challenger League 25 years ago – were recognized at a township council meeting in May.

“After playing in the Challenger League for many years together, they enjoyed playing together so much, that coaches decided to form a basketball team for the Special Olympics,” Mayor Laurie Burns said, noting only 10 athletes are allowed per team.

The Tornadoes made their debut in 2018 at the the Special Olympics Arena, securing fourth place in regional competition. The following year, players soared to new heights, clinching gold in regional and state competition, but also at the state level.

Their season was cut short in 2020 due to COVID, and no games were played the following year, but the team’s spirit “remained unbroken,” Burns said.

The Tornadoes again showcased their competitive prowess in 2022, securing fourth place in the state competition. The following year, they claimed gold in regional competition and added a bronze medal on the state level.

Burns said the team’s accomplishments showcase its “dedication, hard work and spirit.”

“Through tireless efforts and unwavering dedication,” she added, “they have inspired us all with their resilience.”

Special Olympics New Jersey currently serves more than 24,000 athletes throughout the state, according to its website. All of its programs are free to registered athletes, including insurance, facilities, equipment, uniforms, housing and meals for events, awards, sports and education.

In addition to programs on the local, county, sectional and state levels, the organization offers free programs and activities at the Special Olympics New Jersey Sports Complex in Lawrenceville, including Camp Shriver – named for Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver – fitness training, Athlete University, coach and volunteer training sessions and family programs.
