Harrison Township ushered in 2025 with leadership changes during its annual reorganization meeting on January 2.
Adam Wingate and Thomas “TJ” Coakley were sworn in as new members of the township committee, each beginning three-year terms.
Their appointments marked the end of Louis Manzo and Michelle Powell’s tenures, which concluded on December 31.
The committee unanimously selected Wingate, a lifelong resident of Mullica Hill, as the new mayor.
For Coakley, this marks his first term on the committee.
Known for his diverse background as a computer science adjunct professor at Rowan University and a sixth-degree black belt in Okinawa Kempo, he conveyed gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
He reportedly acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, former Mayor Manzo, and expressed a strong commitment to fulfilling his new responsibilities with dedication and effort.
Wingate, who previously served on the committee from 2020 to 2023, reflected on the township’s trajectory during his first address as mayor.
He emphasized that 2025 represented a transformative moment for the community, with challenges and opportunities ahead.
He conveyed optimism about addressing upcoming changes through collaboration, transparency, and practical decision-making.
Wingate is deeply connected to the area and highlighted his ties to Harrison Township, where his family has lived for three generations.
His vision appeared rooted in a passion for preserving the township’s unique character while embracing its potential for growth.
He also identified pressing issues, including the township’s financial concerns and the need to upgrade its wastewater treatment system, noting that solutions would require collective effort and careful planning.
Lawrence Moore retained his position as deputy mayor for another year while other committee members expressed confidence in the new team.
There was a shared sentiment that the diverse perspectives within the committee would ultimately strengthen its ability to navigate future challenges.
With a renewed focus on community-centered leadership, Harrison Township’s new administration sees 2025 as a year of progress and collaboration.
