The much-anticipated Voorhees Got Talent auditions are just around the corner.
Set to take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29, the auditions are expected to draw a large turnout of performers, including dancers, singers, poets and magicians.
The brainchild of Gabrielle Horvitz, also the event’s director, Voorhees Got Talent aims to highlight diverse performances.
“We love to watch our community’s talent,” said Horvitz, who directs the Voorhees Middle School drama club.
Horvitz wants this year’s competition to draw a wide variety of performances from participants of all ages.
“We love seeing residents who are out of school showcase their talent,” she noted. “Once in the real world, it’s sometimes harder for people to prioritize their talent, and they may think they’ve missed their chance. This is the perfect opportunity for the community of all ages to showcase their talents.
“We’re not hoping for any specific talent in particular, only excited to give everyone the opportunity to shine.”
Participants interested in auditioning are encouraged to showcase their best performances – and their confidence.
“Go for it,” Horvitz emphasized. “What do you have to lose? It’s never too late for you. Bring your confidence and shine!”
To ensure a smooth audition process, participants are encouraged to register in advance at voorheesarts.com or voorheesnj.com. Acts should no more than four minutes long and those who need music for their performances should send it to Horvitz in advance. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, so early registration is recommended.
Horvitz explained what judges will look for in competitors.
“The judges are looking for talent, confidence, your act being performance ready, and something ‘wow-worthy,’” she said. “So make sure you are prepared for your audition. Be the whole package.”
The township is known for its vibrant arts community, according to Horvitz, and events like Voorhees Got Talent amplify that.
“Voorhees has a strong foundation in the arts, and this event plays a pivotal role in enriching that culture,” she observed. “By bringing together local artists, performers and art enthusiasts, it fosters a sense of collaboration and shared purpose.”
This year’s auditions will take place 4 p.m. at the Lions Lake Community Center on Dutchtown Road in the township, instead of the previous location at Voorhees Town Center, because of a spring fire at the latter. There is also the possibility for virtual submissions. Interested participants should contact Horvitz at [email protected] to arrange for a self-tape opportunity.
Participants who impress the judges will receive a “golden ticket” at their audition and will advance to the semifinal round on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m., also at Lions Lake. The final round will coincide with the township tree lighting on Nov. 24, when the top performers will compete for cash prizes: $1,000 for first place, $500 for second and $250 for third.
Voorhees Got Talent is not just about the performers, Horvitz pointed out; it’s a community event where anyone can be part of the audience. The competition is also seeking judges with experience in the arts.
“If you have any qualifications in the arts,” Horvitz advised, “please reach out to me and let us know your credentials. We would love more people to be involved.”
