Welcome to the Jersey Gypsy column, where our resident travel reporter, Valentina Lopez, roams the globe in pursuit of stories.
As someone with years of experience in the Melbourne nightlife scene, I have to say that Auckland’s nightlife is different, in a good way. Exciting, stylish, surprises around every corner.
Having travelled from Australia, the differences between these scenes and back home make it even more fascinating. So I figured to share some personal favourites and recommendations to make the most of your Auckland night. If you’re up for it, let’s dive in.
Exploring Auckland City at Night: Where to Begin
Auckland city at night transforms into a dynamic playground. I think you should start your evening wandering down Queen Street and Viaduct Harbour.
Queen Street, bustling with street performers. You’re entertained even on your way to a venue. The Viaduct Harbour, on the other hand, is about outdoor dining under the stars. Very nice, especially when paired with a waterfront breeze.
The Best Bars in Auckland for a Memorable Evening
The Auckland bar scene, it’s something. A standout for me is The Glass Goose Bar & Eatery. It’s elevated above the city. You might have seen a few photos of this place, and it lives up to its reputation.
The fairy-lit decor and lounging spaces make it perfect for unwinding with friends. For those unfamiliar with rooftop bars like these, think of the breezy coastal bars in Sydney but more intimate.
Auckland’s Best Bars to Visit:
- The Glass Goose Bar & Eatery – Perfect for cocktails and panoramic views.
- Deadshot – A speakeasy with custom cocktails tailored to your taste.
- Hi-So – A chic rooftop bar offering epic views of Auckland’s skyline.
I noticed that bars in Auckland often tailor their decor and menus to match their unique identity. I found that quite refreshing compared to the more standardised setups in my hometown of Melbourne – generic, even.
Hidden Gems Among Auckland Bars You Shouldn’t Miss
Not all bars in Auckland are easy to spot. Caretaker, tucked away on a quiet street, has this cozy, low-lit environment. It’s the kind of place where staff listens to your flavour preferences before serving a cocktail that feels tailor-made.
Tip for Visitors: If flashy bars aren’t your thing, seek out small venues like Caretaker. They have a more personalised service and a vibe you won’t find in larger, more crowded spots.
Auckland Nightclubs That Bring the Energy
When you’re ready to shift gears, Auckland nightclubs deliver with style. A must-visit is Impala, which you might have seen in promo ads when they are hosting international DJs.
The music here leans towards dance beats and house, similar in energy to clubs in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. The crowd is a mix of locals and travellers, always friendly but never over the top.
For a completely different clubbing experience, Cassette Nine has this quirky decor and an unpretentious vibe. This spot stands out with its famous teapot cocktails and themed events.
Quick Club Picks:
- Impala – Modern beats for an energetic dance floor.
- Cassette Nine – A mix of playful decor and themed party vibes.
Fun Things to Do in Auckland at Night Beyond Drinking
If drinking isn’t the focus for the evening, there are plenty of fun things to do in Auckland at night. Head to the Sky Tower for breathtaking nighttime views. 328 meters high, an observation deck with a rare perspective of Auckland’s twinkling city lights.
Or, for something more adventurous, book a night-time kayak tour. C’mon, why not? It launches from the city’s waterfront. If you want a unique way to experience Auckland Harbour while taking in Rangitoto Island views under the moonlight, I can’t think of a better idea.
Auckland Pubs with a Unique Atmosphere
Pubs in Auckland still hold onto that classic charm. I like the Occidental Belgian Beer Café – cozy setting, a bit of that old-world charm. They serve incredible mussels on the side, by the way.
Not exactly my thing, but for sports lovers, The Fox Sporting Bar is the obvious choice. Screens playing nonstop matches plus a good pint. The local crowd here made it feel like home. It’s a bit like pubs in Sydney or Newcastle but cozier.
Rooftop Bars in Auckland for Stunning Views
The appeal of rooftop bars in Auckland is easy to figure out. I already mentioned Hi-So, but another gem is Dr. Rudi’s Rooftop Brewing Co. It’s in the Viaduct Harbour and it has craft beer (brewed onsite!). The balcony vividly reminded me of waterfront bars in Australia but with a distinct Auckland flair.
Late-Night Entertainment in Auckland That Delivers
Beyond clubs and pubs, don’t miss Auckland’s Comedy Club on Queen Street if you’re into comedy. And if live shows are your thing, catch a show at the Civic Theatre. As someone who loves Melbourne’s arts scene, this theatre is special to me.
Speaking of which, it’s kind of impossible not to compare Auckland night to cities like Sydney or Melbourne. Auckland is smaller, yes, but this adds to its charm. Places feel less crowded, so personal connections shine.
Bars in Auckland also take more creative risks with their themes, something that occasionally gets lost in Australia’s larger cities.
A key takeaway for all the Aussies out there: if you’re expecting the busy chaos of Sydney, Auckland will surprise you with its relaxed yet buzzing vibes. It’s an underrated gem for nightlife enthusiasts. Take your time and enjoy it!
