The Boys and Girls Club of Camden County will hold its annual Susan K. Asbell Sponsor A Child fundraiser dinner on Oct. 10.
This year’s dinner will be held at Fleming’s Steakhouse in Marlton. Tickets are $125 and include a four-course meal.
Boys and Girls Club CEO Bernadette Shanahan said the event is one of the club’s favorites, and members are eager to return to in-person fundraising. She said that while the state has had few COVID restrictions in the last year, older community members have remained hesitant about large events.
“We really are thrilled for this event,” Shanahan said. “The kickoff dinner is always one of our favorites, so we are excited it is back after a few-year break from the pandemic … “
The Sponsor A Child is named for the late Susan K. Asbell, a dedicated supporter of the Boys and Girls Club who was killed in a 2014 plane crash that also took the life of philanthropist Lewis Katz. She was the wife of former Camden County Prosecutor Sam Absell.
“Susan was an amazing supporter of our club and the first champion of this Sponsor A Child Campaign to raise unrestricted funds for our program’s activities and services,” Shanahan noted. “Her family and (we) here at the club wanted to do something after she tragically passed away in 2014 to honor her.”
The Sponsor A Child fundraiser not only honors Asbell’s memory, but also raises money for the children of South Jersey. Sponsorships for the event begin at $300 and go up to $5,000, while club sponsorships are available on its website. They include character and leadership sponsorships for one to two children, educational and career development sponsorships for three to five children, health and life skills sponsorships for six to nine kids, arts sponsorships for 10 to 20 kids and sports and fitness sponsorships for 25 or more children.
Guests and businesses interested in attending must RSVP by Oct. 3, including filling out a form for sponsorship and ticket purchases. Applications are available on the website at begreatcamden.org.
