Shelter feels the love during Valentine’s adoption weekend

More than 60 Homeward Bound animals find homes

Homeward Bound Adoption Center hosted a Valentine’s-themed “Home Is Where the Heart Is” adoption event early this month, with help from the Camden County Board of Commissioners.

Over three days, the center waived adoption fees and placed 60 new animals into homes. The Valentine’s slogan was created to help pair people who may be without a date on the holiday with animals that need homes.

Commissioner Jon Young said he hopes the county can help sponsor something similar in the future.

“It was successful,” he noted of the adoption event. “Things went very well. We had traffic to the adoption center every day. There were a total of 65 animals adopted over the weekend, which is a great number.

“Six of the dogs that were adopted over the weekend were in shelter care for over a year,” added Young, who was in attendance on one of the event’s three days. “It goes to speak about the care we take of these animals. Right now, the shelter is at a 95 percent save rate, so these dogs are going to continue to get walked, fed, and cared for..”

The shelter prides itself on the care it gives to animals. All those staying at Homeward Bound are properly vaccinated, fed and given the right amount of exercise, even if a particular animal has an extended stay.

Young explained that Homeward Bound is especially busy this time of year, caring for  more animals than it would have liked to at one time.

“The shelter was really busting out the seams,” he said. “So when we waive the fee, it really provides a great push of adoptions. We enjoy doing this, so maybe we will try for more events in the future.”

There are currently no scheduled adoption events, but Camden County residents are encouraged to visit the Homeward Bound Adoption Center in Blackwood or visit its  website at homewordboundnj.org for additional information.
