The kickoff for the 2024 Camden Peace Games was held at Roosevelt Plaza on Market Street July 25.
The event was organized by the Board of Commissioners, Camden City, Camden Community Partnership, and other community organizations. The Camden Peace Games, a free co-ed basketball tournament aimed at promoting peace and community building among local youth, took place on Saturday, July 27, and Sunday, July 28, at Von Nieda Park in the Cramer Hill neighborhood.
Activities during the two-day tournament included a basketball tournament, free food, face painting, giveaways, a bounce house, a DJ, and live performances.
This goal for the peace games aimed to bring peace, community, and brotherhood to the City of Camden through the power of sports.
Prominent attendees at the kickoff included Camden County Commissioner Al Dyer, Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen, Camden City Council President Angel Fuentes, and Glen M. Jackson, president of P.A.R.K. CMD.
“We look forward to this event every year because it is a chance for our young people to come together, have some fun, and build bonds with one another,” Commissioner Al Dyer had said ahead of the peace games. “This event is a crucial component to promoting peace and understanding here in the city and we are looking forward to a great weekend. In addition, it provides the opportunity for adults involved in the city’s long and prestigious basketball legacy to come together in fellowship during the summer months.”
The Camden Peace Games is part of Camden Community Partnership’s Connect the Lots program, which organizes fun, family-friendly community events. Since its inception in 2017, the Camden Peace Games have aimed to foster peace and brotherhood/sisterhood among Camden’s youth through sports activities.
