Paper trail: Mantua hosts shred event

For the second and last time this year, Mantua will enable residents to shred old documents and papers on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at the municipal building parking lot.

Documents that will be securely shredded at the free event include old bills, tax information and financial statements. A township shredding day also occurred in April.

“Our free shredding events have been hosted by the township for several years now and are typically twice annually in both the spring and fall,” said Mayor Robert Zimmerman. “The shredding event is great for Mantua residents. However, (it) is open to Gloucester County residents, too.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our residents to rid themselves of old paper documents in a secure and convenient fashion.”

A mobile shredding truck will be on site with workers to assist residents, who will hand over their documents, then are free to leave. Shredding itself is limited to paper only; cardboard, binder clips, plastic and plastic bags are not eligible. Papers with stables and paper clips can still be accepted.

“A lot of people like it,” Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto said of shredding, “since it’s a pain to do it with the cheap ones at home.”

Expenses for the shredding day are paid for by the state.

“You actually witness the documents being shredded in your presence,” Zimmerman said of the day. “I love attending and usually bring some household documents myself to be safely destroyed. “Again,” he added, “our shredding event on Sept. 14 is free and at no expense to the local taxpayer.

“The overall expense for each event is estimated to be about $800, and is paid for by a recycling grant.”
