NJEA Honors Retired Teacher
Dr. Judith M. Owens was the first African American elected president of the NJEA, (New Jersey Education Association). The Dr. Judith M. Owens Spirit Award honors Dr. Owens’ historical role and leadership within the organization. The award was designed to uplift members who have been champions of ethnic-minority rights and issues and have significantly impacted education with the same spirit.
This year’s 2022 recipient is Eleanor Clark. She was a teacher at Osage Elementary School in Voorhees Township for 42 years. An advocate for students by educating, inspiring, and ensuring every student had a chance to meet their full potential by encompassing their weaknesses and building confidence.
She implemented the Before and After School Clubs. She served as a mentor focusing on at risk, ESL and Inclusive students, providing extra attention and support during the school day.
Her beliefs in equity, equality and social justice for all individuals has led her to ensure that students of color and disadvantaged socio-economic students have the tools to achieve their highest expectations. Her hard work and commitment greatly benefited the students and was valued by other staff and administration. Eleanor’s career spanned over generations of families.
Before becoming a member of the NJREA Eleanor was an inexhaustible union member and served in various union roles at the local, county, state and national levels.
