Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity and Angels Community Outreach will be building an ADA compliant ramp and providing much needed home repairs to Mr. Leo J. Harris, a veteran who served in World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War.
Historically, Gloucester County Habitat focuses on their Homeownership Program that allows low to moderate income families the opportunity to achieve the dream of homeownership. However, when Harris’ story came across Habitat’s desk, the local affiliate knew his needs align with Habitat’s vision where everyone has a decent place to live.
“Habitat is pleased to partner with Angels Community Outreach to bring our skills and fundraising dollars together to support a Gloucester County Veteran, a true American hero”, Tony Isabella , Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity said. “This project falls in line with the global mission of Habitat for Humanity – seeking to put God’s love into action.”
The scope of work includes installing a permanent ADA compliant ramp, upgrades to his living room and bathroom.
“I am so glad our paths crossed. Mr. Harris is such a gentle soul. It is an honor to help this amazing Veteran. From the day I met him and he told me he could not get outside, I knew I had to enlist help and make it happen.” Elissa Darrow, Director of Angels Community Outreach said.
And help Darrow did, as Habitat and Angels volunteers are coming together to give Harris the safe, decent home he deserves. The organizations are proud to have partnered with Home Depot, Columbia Bank and Quikrete to bring a sense of peace and normalcy to Harris.

While the mission has significantly expanded since 2009, Angels Community Outreach originally started off as a clothing closet. Now, in addition to the clothing closet, Angels Community Outreach also provides food, toiletries and more.
