A gas leak has led to the closure of Mary Bray Elementary School in Camden County.
Staff members at the school smelled gas when they arrived Tuesday morning, prompting an investigation.
Officials quickly determined that the leak stemmed from one of the building’s boilers. As a result, school officials canceled classes for the day to allow time for repairs.
The Mount Ephraim Public Schools district, which oversees Mary Bray Elementary, has not yet announced when classes will resume.
In a statement released around 9 a.m., the district confirmed that the company responsible for maintaining the school’s boilers is on its way, but no estimated repair time was available.
Initially, the school planned a two-hour delay while the gas leak was investigated.
However, after firefighters and utility workers confirmed the presence of the leak, the decision was made to cancel school altogether for the day.
The Mount Ephraim Fire Department has reported that the boiler has been secured and the building properly ventilated.
Mary Bray Elementary serves students from pre-K through fourth grade, and the district is expected to provide further updates later on Tuesday.
