The Berlin Borough Community Center, a key gathering spot for residents, recently underwent significant renovations that are expected to further enhance its role as a hub for sports, community events and social gatherings.
Terry Myers – coordinator of events at the center – shared insights on its transformation and expanding role in the community.
“I’ve been involved with the center for a little over a year now, handling event coordination and scheduling,” he said. “It’s been an exciting time, especially with all the changes that have taken place. The renovations have really made a difference, and we’re seeing more community involvement than ever before.”
The center – located at 250 South Franklin Ave. – offers amenities that cater to the needs of both local residents and organizations. The newly renovated space can be rented for various events, including birthday parties, graduations and meetings.
“The center is truly a versatile space,” Myers added. “We have two full basketball courts, two conference/party rooms, and a large lobby area. It’s the perfect venue for just about any type of event.”
As a coach and advocate for youth sports, Myers sees the center’s potential to become a key training facility for local athletes and students.
“I work closely with other youth sports coaches in the area,” she noted, “particularly those involved in Berlin-based athletics. We’ve also partnered with the local Girl Scouts to ensure that there are a variety of programs for young people to take part in. The basketball courts are in great demand, and we’re looking forward to sharing open gym hours soon.”
The center will also host camps, clinics and other athletic programs in the coming months, programs Myers believes are essential for youth development.
“It’s a place where kids can be active, but what I really love to see is when kids who don’t typically hang out together become friends through sports and events,” he pointed out. “It creates a sense of unity that’s hard to find elsewhere.”
The next few months are full of activities scheduled at the center that will include Halloween parties; a craft show with surprise celebrity guest; and a borough fire department event.
“There’s a lot to look forward to,” said Myers. “We’re excited to see the center bustling with activity again.”
Among reasons for the Berlin Community Center’s popularity are its affordability and accessibility, reasonable rates and expansive size. The venue is within walking distance for some residents and the recent renovations have improved the experience for visitors.
“Some of the major changes include new lighting, along the walkways and additional lighting in the parking lots, which makes it safer and more accessible at night,” Myers explained. “We’ve also freshly painted the lobby and added new paint and carpeting to the conference rooms.
“It’s the little things that make a big difference, and we’re planning even more improvements in the future.”
But Myers also believes the upgrades are just the beginning.
“The renovations have really transformed the center,” he said, “and we’re excited to continue improving it for everyone who uses the space. I’d love to see the center operating from morning to night, with programs running throughout the day. I plan to keep working with summer-camp directors and other community leaders to attract even more programs and events.
“My goal is to make the center a place where everyone feels welcome and where people of all ages can come together.”
At a time when communities are divided across the nation, Myers believes the community center can be a unifying force.
“I’m here to listen and to help meet the community’s needs,” he promised. “I hope that through sports, events and programs, we can come together around ideas that truly bring unity to the community.”
