Lunch on the house

Free meal meant to make Deptford seniors feel "part" of the community

Deptford will get the elderly out of the house and express its thanks them with a senior luncheon at Auletto Caterers on Monday, Nov. 6, from noon to 3 p.m.

“It’s for all the seniors to get out to meet and greet friends and family,” said Township Clerk Dina Zawadski. “It provides a way for us to give back to seniors (in Deptford). You don’t have to move to Florida to have fun. You can still stay in Deptford and have fun as well.

“It’s a time to get out, reconnect and enjoy a free lunch.

The township is expecting between 300 and 500 people for the event, according to Zawadski, and it will also feed a senior’s family. The luncheon will offer a variety of attractions for people to see and participate in, including music from a band performing classic tunes and door prizes. A trivia game will also feature prizes.

Township officials will also be on hand to interact with guests, including Mayor Paul Medany and Police Chief Joseph Smith, who will also bring officers.

Zawadski praised the event as one that helps seniors stay involved in the community.

“We give out information about the township and other events happening,” she noted. “The event enables them to stay involved in the community and to help make them feel comfortable in Deptford and glad to be a part of it.”

The luncheon is one of many events the township hosts for its seniors. The next monthly senior Bingo night is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the township community center’s gym, and the senior winter wonderland is set for Thursday, Dec. 14, at the same location. More events can be found on the township’s website.

“It’s fabulous,” Sawadski said of the luncheon. “It’s been 17 years since we first started the event and it’s a way to give back to seniors who are on a fixed income. It has only been growing more and more every year since we first started.”
