The holiday event raised funds to help improve Harrison Township’s parks and add handicapped-accessible features.

Ella Harris Park was the setting for the Trick or Trot 5K costume fun run and one-mile walk on Oct. 22, when dozens turned out to compete dressed in their Halloween costumes.

Competitors had the choice to compete in costumes, which ranged from a dinosaur to Scooby-Doo.

“The turnout for the event was good,” said Recreation Coordinator Sharon Chew. “We had a lot of great costumes at the event and it went really well. We raised a lot of money at it.”

The event was hosted by the Harrison Township Recreation Commission and with Victory Physical Therapy, its primary sponsor. It was a way to help raise funds for improvements at township parks, including making areas more handicapped accessible with items like picnic tables and swings.

“The money goes towards making the parks accessible for all,” Chew noted. “Like we’re making it more accessible for people in wheelchairs. William Wilt (complex) already has a swing over there that’s wheelchair accessible, and we’re looking to get new additions at Ella Harris.”

Chew expects the changes will come soon.

Competitors for the run and walk were split into age groups, including kids and teenagers: 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and older. The top runners from each of those groups were recognized for their effort, and there were also costume contests for children 14 and under, adults and groups.

Other sponsors for the event were businesses in Mullica Hill, including restaurants, food services and health-care providers. The full list of sponsors and winners can be found on the Harrison Township Recreation Commission’s Facebook page.

“Special thank you to our sponsors,” the commission posted on the page, “many of whom have sponsored for many, many years. Your dedication is greatly appreciated.”
