Grand Jury returns murder indictment for 2016 shooting

The Burlington County Prosecutor’s office released a statement on Thursday, April 6 regarding the 2016 fatal shooting of a Burlington Township resident.

The following is a statement from the Burlington County Prosecutors’s Office:

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott A. Coffina announced April 6 that a Beverly City man has been indicted by a Burlington County Grand Jury for fatally shooting a 22-year-old Burlington Township resident in November 2016.

Darius Bridges, 27, of the 200 block of Broad Street in Beverly, was indicted on one count of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and one count of second-degree certain persons not to have weapons.

The indictment was returned March 30. An arraignment in Superior Court will be scheduled soon. Bridges is being detained in the Burlington County Jail.

The investigation revealed that during the early evening of November 25, 2016, Bridges fired several shots along the 100 block of East Federal Street near the intersection with York Street in Burlington City, fatally striking Howard G. Young Jr., 22, of Burlington Township.

The victim was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy performed by Burlington County Medical Examiner Dr. Ian Hood determined the manner of death to be homicide, and the cause to be a gunshot to the back.

The investigation was conducted by detectives from the Burlington City Police Department and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.

The case will be prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Bob VanGilst. The lead investigators are Prosecutor’s Office Det. Michael Reagan and Burlington City Police Department Det. Jamie Lambing.
