Much of the Monday, Nov. 18, Delran Board of Education meeting was dedicated to honoring athletes for achievements during the fall season, including in girls soccer, field hockey, girls tennis, girls cross country, boys cross country, football and boys soccer. Both teams and individual players were recognized.
Prior to honoring the sports teams, Superintendent Brian Brotschul and STEM Coordinator Erica DeMichele recognized Delran High School science teacher Siobhan McVay for her Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. While DeMichele and Superintendent Brotschul spoke about McVay, several students also complimented the teacher.
“Because we are recognizing Ms. Siobhan McVay tonight, I would like to share my own thoughts,” said DHS student and board of education student representative Abigail Stiglich. “I am extremely lucky to have had her as a teacher and mentor to me at Delran High School. She has affected many students’ lives and I am so proud of Ms. McVay for being recognized as the outstanding teacher and human that she is.”
After the presentation for McVay, athletic director Anthony Guidotti spoke on the success of each team. Guidotti said in his time at Delran, this year has been the school’s most successful fall season.
Guidotti began the athlete presentations by honoring Ryan Matthews and Sydney Croly from the girls soccer team. Matthews earned first team in the Liberty Division in the Burlington County Scholastic League as a defender. Croly earned second team as a midfielder.
For field hockey, Mia Lanzilotta, Kylie Pietras and Margaret Flynn were honored for their achievements. Lanzilotta and Pietras earned first team in the Patriot Division in the BCSL as a forward and defender, respectively, and Flynn earned second team as a midfielder.
In girls tennis, Abigail Stiglich earned first team in the Patriot Division at first singles.
Khushi Patel and Alexandra Mormando earned first team at first doubles.
Girls and boys cross country featured seven honorees. Anise Howard and Riley Maher both earned first team in the Patriot Division. Gwenna Singer, Madeline Brignola, Kayla Daly, Anthony Guarino and Nicholas Guarino all earned second team in the Patriot Division.
“The Delran football team had another successful season and another 8-2 campaign,” said Guidotti. “What I am most proud of with this team is that this group is what started the new culture of Delran football that has been needed here for a long time.”
The Bears’ football team won the Patriot Division for the first time since 2012 and also made it to the second round of playoffs. The players that contributed to the team’s success include: Derek Namnun, Anthony Catlett-Davis, Khristian Urena, Nicholas Enoch, Jake Baumann, Joseph Jesuele, Nyon Barnes, Jacob Brogan, Christian Locke, Connor Daly, Richard Brown, Ryan Saracino, Miekel House, Joseph Rush, Burhan Kahraman, Gabriel Braga, Alexander Chiemingo-Butler, Michael McNinney, Ayomikun Alarapon, Jonathan DeSouza, Tyler Travis, Ian Kravil and Jadon Phillips.
As well as Derrick Bohn, Gavin Smedile, Silas Ferreira, Julian Chiemingo Rivera, Peter Pelagatti, Caleb Church, Anthony Scotto DiPetra, Samual Brogan,Karanbir Singh, Austin Eckert, Jack Shepkosky, Tyler Heckler, Nicholas Baldwin, Jurian Fareira, Ryan Braga, Joseph Vasconcelos, Denilson DeSouza Jr, Jordan Onyango, Raj Patel and Giovanni Mucci.
Several players on the football team earned individual honors. Dustin Desher, RJ Moten, Troy Wells, Eren Ibas, Kenneth Fletcher, Paul Ginty, Ahmed Johnson, Jason Holmes and Gavin Moore earned first team West Jersey Football League in the Patriot Division. Zachary Palmer-Smith, Jack Benson, Sean Theis and Ryan Tamres earned second team.
“For Boys Soccer, this is a stretch here of dominance in South Jersey that you’re probably not going to see for a long time and its the effort they have given all offseason, preseason and during the season,” said Guidotti. “Five-peat South Jersey Sectional Champions.”
The boys soccer team included Christopher Delliponti, Nicholas Eastburn, Drew Fountain, Andrew Grello, Colin Heisler, Ryan Leusner, Patrick Little, Eamon McLoughlin, Landon Urwiler, Victor Vasquez, Tyler Meiluta, Joseph Mormando, CJ Rogers, Matthew Ryan, Aiden Schreader, Christopher Siemien, Justin Smith and Brian Stricker. Ryan Burrell, Matthew Meiluta, Daniel Strohlein and Frankie Taylor earned first team BCSL at their positions. Ryan Howlett and Kenneth Howley earned second team.
