Mayor’s Message — Williams Syndrome Awareness Month and Super Saturday

Mayor Joann Gattinelli proclaimed May as Williams Syndrome Awareness Month and anticipates the upcoming Super Saturday celebration

Hannah Sirisky, 9, accepted Mayor Joann Gattinelli’s proclamation on behalf of those with Williams Syndrome.

According to the Williams Syndrome Association, “Williams Syndrome is a genetic condition that is present at birth and can affect anyone. It is characterized by medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays and learning challenges. These often occur side by side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities and an affinity for music.” It was brought to my attention by a loving mother whose child lives with Williams Syndrome in our community. She has a passion for spreading awareness and requested we proclaim the month of May as Williams Syndrome Awareness Month in Washington Township.

After learning about this rare syndrome that can cause medical and developmental complications, I thought this was a great idea. I have come to find out although Williams Syndrome is rare, occurring in one in 10,000 births, there are several families who have members of their family living with Williams Syndrome right here in Washington Township. I read the proclamation at the last council meeting on April 26. Now, May is officially Williams Syndrome month! Informational handouts are available by contacting my assistant, Alicia Rotella, at [email protected], or by visiting the Williams Syndrome Association website (www.williams-syndrome.org).

Once again it is time for the annual Super Saturday event on May 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As we have been advertising this event, I am happy to see how enthusiastic people are about this day of community building. For residents, this is a tradition we are happy to keep alive. Come to enjoy the town fair with amusement rides, family entertainment, great food and shopping! I am also looking forward to the canine demonstration by the Washington Township Police Department. I brought my kids to Super Saturday over the years and loved seeing their excitement.

I look forward to seeing the excitement of the kids growing up in the township and the atmosphere it creates. I am proud of how Super Saturday showcases what Washington Township has to offer. This is such a unique event to the township, and I am happy to continue the tradition with the residents in the community. Please make sure to keep an eye on the “events” section of our website and social media pages, which include Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to stay up-to-date on all the spring and summer events coming up.

Joann Gattinelli is the mayor of Washington Township. She can be reached at [email protected].
