Troop 21502 volunteers at the Seamen’s Church Institute
Tabernacle Girl Scout Troop 21502 spent a day off from school volunteering at the Seamen’s Church Institute in Newark. They packed over 400 gift bags that the Institute will deliver to Seafarers during the holiday season. The gift bags include items needed by the men and women who spend up to nine months at sea. The girls packed hand knitted hats, scarves, toiletries, and candy for the Christmas at Sea program.
Prior to packing the gift bags, the girls were taken on a tour of the Port of Newark. This sparked some interesting discussion among the seventh grade girls as we drove past the ships and countless containers transporting goods to their destinations. We were lucky enough to witness straddle carriers loading and unloading the enormous containers from the ships. It looked like a scene from Star Wars!
The girls enjoyed the day and look forward to future opportunities to help with Christmas at Sea.
