Burlington County College’s chief academic officer, Dr. David Spang, has been appointed Interim President of the college by the BCC Board of Trustees.
Spang, has served as Provost — the college’s second ranking position — since the post was created last April.
“One of Burlington County College’s many strengths is a staff rich with leadership,” Board of Trustees Chair George Nyikita said. “Dr. Spang has done outstanding work to make our college’s academic programs among the best in the nation. The Board of Trustees is very confident in Dr. Spang’s ability to lead the institution during this interim period and keep it moving forward as we assess the long-term future of the college.”
Spang joined BCC in 2005 and has held other leadership positions including Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Science, Mathematics and Technology. He holds bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees from Rutgers University in Material Science and Engineering, as well as a MBA degree from Rutgers University.
“Working with Burlington County College’s exceptionally talented and dedicated faculty, staff and students in a new way is very exciting and I look forward to the challenge,” Spang said. “Burlington County College helps students develop themselves throughout their lives and this is a great opportunity to continue the college’s tradition of innovation and academic excellence while providing quality education at affordable prices.”
Before the appointment, Spang has been concentrating on completing the college’s periodic review report for the Middle State Commission on Higher Education — an important milestone for the college’s accreditation.
Before appointed the college’s first Provost in April 2013, Spang served the college as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Science, Mathematics and Technology.
Spang is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and the American Society for Materials. Dr. Spang is the college’s representative to the Association of American Colleges and Universities, which ensures the advantages of a liberal education, are available to all students with an emphasis on broad knowledge, transferable skills, and a strong sense of value, ethics, and civic engagement.
Spang is a regular presenter and contributor to the body of knowledge in higher education innovation, which includes work stemming from his leadership with National Science Foundation grants, NASA grants, and other areas of strategic importance.
Spang resides with his family in Medford.
