The Deptford fire department is teaming with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in a campaign to emphasize the necessity of smoke alarms.

The week-long campaign – which coincides with national Fire Prevention Week and begins on Sunday, Oct. 6 – will feature a food truck event at Deptford Memorial Park on Saturday, Oct. 5, from noon to 5 p.m. The department’s Union Fire Company will host an open house later in the month, on Tuesday, Oct.15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. And the Oak Valley Fire Company will host a trunk-or-treat event on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Smoke alarms reduce the risk of death in a home fire by more than half, or 54%, according to the NFPA. Once an alarm sounds, occupants have less than two minutes to get out safely. Working alarms are an early warning.

To learn more about volunteering in the community, the fire events will include recruitment booths, and individuals can also visit www.deptfordfd.org.
