The South Jersey chapter of HaZamir: the International Jewish High School Choir, conducted by Cantor Leon Sher, just began its new season and is accepting members of teens in grades eight through 12. Rehearsals are held every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Congregation Beth El, in Voorhees.

HaZamir is a musical youth movement that provides an opportunity for Jewish teens of all denominations and backgrounds to sing sophisticated Jewish choral music in a fun social setting. HaZamir South Jersey is part of a network that includes more than 25 chapters throughout the United States and Israel. Local chapters generally meet weekly to learn a common repertoire, and then join other chapters to polish and perform that repertoire at regional, national, and international events, culminating in a gala concert with more than 250 performing teens. This year’s gala concert will be at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall.

HaZamir also sponsors a highly selective Chamber Choir made up of about 50 auditioned American and Israeli HaZamir members who aspire to a more challenging experience. This group prepares and performs additional repertoire at the Lincoln Center concert and elsewhere. In addition, HaZamir offers a college credit program for high school juniors and seniors.

HaZamir International is now in its 22nd year. The South Jersey chapter was founded by Cantor Sher in 2012. Parent coordinator is Helene Raush. For information, email [email protected].
