The Deptford fire department is seeking volunteers.
The department provides volunteers free training and equipment and as well as local- and state-certified training to gain skills in communication, problem solving, teamwork and time management.
“There are many ways you can help protect our community,” said Chairman Michael White. “No experience is necessary.”
“Our volunteers come from all different backgrounds,” said volunteer Fire Chief Richard Thomas. “It’s a great way to meet new people and network.””
Here are the levels of training for volunteers:
Firefighter
The role requires state Firefighter 1 certification, but all training and equipment is free.
Junior member (ages 16-17)
These members respond to incidents under supervision and serving the community.
Cadet (ages 14-15)
These volunteers learn techniques and skills by participating in drill nights and prepare to become junior firefighters at 16.
Canteen
These volunteers provide rehabilitation services not only for department members, but firefighters all over Gloucester County, and are at the scene of major incidents as a member of the department’s Rehab Unit.
Fire Police
Fire police assist with traffic and crowd control at the scene of fires and motor-vehicle crashes.
Volunteering opens doors to potential career opportunities in the emergency services field and beyond, according to the fire department. Given that there were 1,400 fire calls for the department in 2023, volunteers can expect to gain plenty of hands-on experience.
“We hope our number of volunteers increases to support our growing number of calls,” said Thomas.
