Library ushers in 2024 for kids

The Mullica Hill Library will host its annual New Year’s Eve at Noon party on Friday, Dec. 29, at 11:30 a.m.

While the event is intended for kids from 2 to 8 years old who can’t stay up late for the traditional ringing in of the new year, it is described as one that both parents and kids can partake in. About 100 people are expected to attend the free event; a library card is not required.

“This is one of our most popular programs,” said the library’s Head of Youth Services, Stephanie Smith. “It’s truly an all-ages event; even the parents get into the music and dances with the children.”

As on New Year’s Eve, there will be a countdown to the clock striking noon that will emulate the traditional clock ringing in the new year at midnight on Jan. 1. Once that happens, the party will begin. Music for the event will be provided by Toni Baloney, who is described by Smith as a “fabulous” music teacher in Washington Township.

“It’s a dance party by Toni Baloney,” said Smith, adding that the performer will forgo her traditional clown look so as not to scare any of the kids. “She sings and plays music and we count down to noon instead of midnight.

“We’ve had Toni Baloney ringing in the new year for at least as long as I’ve been here, which is 12 years.”

The party will take place in the library’s A and B meeting rooms. Registration is required at the calendar on the Gloucester County Library System website by selecting the event’s date. The signup form – one per person and separate – asks for name, email and phone number.

The kids’ party is one of two major holiday activities at the library on New Year’s weekend; the other is a holiday concert on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 2:30 p.m. The library will be closed on New Year’s Day.
