Teens can compete against each other in activities like cornhole and relay races at the July 28 free event.

The Mullica Hill Library will host its first Teen Lawn Olympics on Friday July 28, when participants from ages 13 to 18 will compete against each other in a variety of games that include tailgate activities like a ladder toss and relay races.

Teens will play in teams to begin, and then wind up going one on one to determine a winner,” said teen librarian Crysta Miller. “They will all get to play each game at least once.

“This idea came to be because I had an idea to do a tailgate-style program for teens, just on a smaller scale,” she added. “So, I thought of all the games that are typically played at tailgates and put them all together to make it a fun, new thing.”

The 2 p.m. event is free to all teens, regardless of whether or not they own a library card. Registration is required separately for each applicant, with name, email and phone number. Forms can be accessed at the Gloucester County Library System (GCLS) website.

The event celebrates the end of the library’s summer reading program on Friday, Aug. 4.

“Whether you are a child, teen or an adult, we have a summer reading program for you,” says the library system website. “We’ve got prizes for participants and awesome programming for all different ages happening at all of our branches.”

Starting on Saturday, Aug. 5, the library will go back to its normal programming for kids and teens, after an end-of-summer reading party that is held for all ages.

The Teen Lawn Olympics is among programming at the library that includes the chess club, STEAM events and the Clearview Student Book Club, all for teens.
