The Harrison Township Police Department’s K-9 unit got donations of a crate, treats and toys on April 3 for its lone dog, Dunkin’.
The items came from the Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a nonprofit community of motorcyclists that sponsors fundraising events to support public safety, the U.S. military and wounded soldiers.
Hogs and Heroes has chapters in multiple states; the New Jersey branch was responsible for the K-9 donations, which included a wooden flag with Dunkin’s name engraved on it. They were paid for with proceeds from the foundation’s Celebrity Bartending Night at American Legion Post 452 last month.
“The bartending event on March 24 at the American Legion in Mullica Hill was a huge success,” said the foundation’s Chrissy “Crazy” Barber. “We would like to thank everyone who contributed that night to make this happen, all who attended as well as all who donated food items and other items we needed for that event.”
The K-9 unit is new to Harrison police, having been introduced last year after a donation by late business owner Kenny Patel, owner of two Dunkin’ businesses in Mullica Hill. The K-9’s pooch is paired with Harrison officer Gregory Germscheid.
The unit is not fully supported by the police budget but maintained by donations from residents.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Hogs and Heroes Foundation NJ-1 Chapter for their generous donations to our Harrison Township Police Department K-9 Unit,” said the department’s Facebook page. “Thank you for your unwavering commitment to supporting public safety and the U.S. military.
“We are honored to have your support.”
