Tom Gaines, a longtime resident of Moorestown, New Jersey, died peacefully at home on Feb. 7, at the age of 88.
He enjoyed a successful career as a professional artist and painted up until the last few weeks of his life in his home studio in Moorestown. He also enjoyed painting at his summer home in Belfast, Maine, where he had a second studio.
He was born and raised in Portland, Ore. He was a graduate of the University of Oregon, the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and the University of California San Diego.
Early in his career he was an art professor and Head of the Art Department at Centre College in Danville, Ky. His work was represented by galleries in Philadelphia, New York, and Maine.
He was an avid lover of all the arts, particularly music, film, and theater.
Tom will be sorely missed and remembered by his wife of 53 years, Alice, his daughters Rachel of Greenwich, Conn., and Erika (Leonard Levine) of Haddonfield, New Jersey and his granddaughters, Sophie and Rose, whom he had the fortune of seeing grow up nearby in Haddonfield. He is also survived by his four siblings, Don Gaines, David Gaines, Susan Durrie (George) and Rick Gaines (Tori) and many nieces and nephews.
