The Delaware River Valley led the nation in hospital growth in the 1800s, establishing some of the most noteworthy institutions in the world. Philadelphia soon became a hub for medical students, practitioners and researchers. The concentration of medicine in the city reverberated outward into the Delaware Valley as well.
