Troop 5K run will benefit local nonprofit

Proceeds help military members experiencing hardship

Special to The Sun

The 14th annual Troop A Blue & Gold Trail Run will take place Saturday at West Deptford Park and will benefit a nonprofit that assists military members in need.

The event is open to the public, and runners and walkers of all levels are encouraged to participate. All proceeds, including the registration fee, will be donated to the Alpha Corps Foundation so it can help servicemen and women experiencing hardships.

“Proceeds will be utilized to support the continued education of college bound students and provide economic relief for troopers and their families who have suffered a tragic event or terminal illness,” said organizer Michael Donahue.

This event is family friendly and will have several state police units in attendance. The mounted, canine and tactical patrol units will all take part in the run, and a bagpipes performance and flyover will be performed by the aviation unit.

For the run, standard awards will be given out based on age group and gender. But there will also be special awards for the top state police team and top local law-enforcement team.

“This event is an excellent opportunity for members of the state police and other law-enforcement agencies to interact with the public while raising money for a worthy cause,” Donahue said.

After the run’s 9 a.m. start, there will be entertainment and food provided by Burlington Beef, a sweet treat from the KONA Ice truck, a bouncy house and other activities. The run is held in memory of troops 7775, 7594 and 7953.

Registration for the race ends Friday at 11:59 p.m. The fee is $30.

West Deptford Park is at 1480 Metropolitan Ave. The scenic area features nine soccer fields, six softball fields, three basketball courts, a skate park and a tot lot. The run will take place on the walking track.
