Committee recognizes September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Township committee approves new grants and contracts during meeting.

Tom DiRusso, of the organization End of Prostate Cancer, received a proclamation from the Mantua Township Committee for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

The Mantua Township Committee met on Sept. 20 and started the session with a proclamation to recognize September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Committeeman John Legge presented the proclamation to Tom DiRusso, of the organization  End of Prostate Cancer, to educate men about the importance of prostate screenings.

“I asked to present this proclamation on behalf of the township, as this disease has directly impacted my family,” Legge said. “My dad is a prostate cancer survivor.”

Resolutions discussed during the meeting included funding for multiple departments. The township police department got approval for the purchase of three new vehicles. The funding  this purchase has been secured in the 2021 capital budget.

A contract to Landberg Construction LLC was awarded in the amount of $412,318.79 for the 2021 Road Program, which consists of resurfacing Schaub Road, Warwick Court, Briarwood Lane and Ravenswood Way.

The committee also approved the refund process for tax overpayments on multiple residences, and agreed to the cancellation of taxes for several fully disabled veterans in the area.

The 2020 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Grant was authorized to be inserted into the 2021 budget in the amount of $4,800. A purchase of a new brush crane for the Public Works Department through a national cooperative pricing agreement was also approved. A contract was awarded to Air Repair for air supply, compressor and dryer lines at the department’s  garage in the amount of $28,500.

Two appointments were made at the end of the session: Bill Rebel was appointed plumbing  inspector in the construction office due to a vacancy, and Mike Riggs was named an alternate zoning officer for Mantua.

The next township committee meeting will be held on Monday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. in the municipal building.
