Shamong’s new superintendent believes in ‘putting students first’

The Shamong Township School District has a new superintendent: Mayreni Fermin-Cannon.

Fermin-Cannon introduced herself in a letter to Shamong students and families on Aug. 5. She succeeds Christine Vespe, who has served as superintendent since 2012 and retired after a 35-year career in education on July 31.

Vespe provided a statement at a June board of education meeting summarizing her thoughts and accomplishments during her tenure. She expressed thanks to staff, students, her administrative team and all those she interacted with during her time as superintendent and wished the best for her successor.

“I come to you with over 18 years dedicated to the field of education, a wealth of experiences, and a background in various administrative roles,” Fermin-Cannon said.

Fermin-Cannon holds a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from The College of New Jersey, where she focused on math, science and technology. She has a master of arts from Marygrove College, where she emphasized curriculum, instruction and assessment for grades K-12.

“I’ve acquired certifications in teaching English as a second language and bilingual education, as well as New Jersey certifications in educational leadership, including supervisor, principal, and school administrator,” she said. “Additionally, I serve as an
instructor and mentor for NJEXCEL candidates pursuing supervisory and principal certifications.”

Fermin-Cannon said her vision for the Shamong district is “built on a commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment that prioritizes safety and champions academic excellence.”

“Experiences such as director of curriculum and instruction in the Lumberton Township School District and elementary principal in the Hamilton Township School District have equipped me with a deep understanding of the complexities involved in school administration and the importance of community engagement and family partnerships,” Fermin-Cannon noted.

“As the new superintendent of schools for Shamong, I am committed to continuing our tradition of academic excellence,” she added. “Together, we will create a future where every student is valued, challenged, and empowered to reach their full potential. My approach centers around putting students first. Their safety and happiness are my top priorities.

“I look forward to an outstanding school year.”
