Mantua Mayor’s Message for Feb. 29

Dear Community Friends,

The township committee and I would like to congratulate Denise DeMers on her retirement after twenty-five years of dedicated service to our township. Denise is a long time township resident and has worked in our construction office for many years. She began her career in Mantua back in April 1998 in the finance office, and has spent the majority of her time as a clerk in construction. Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto and I attended a small celebration party for Denise on Friday, Feb. 23 at the township’s administration building.  It was nice to see so many familiar faces all there to offer Denise well wishes.  Her last official workday is Thursday, Feb. 29. We wish Denise much health and happiness in retirement.

On Friday, Feb. 23, Deputy Mayor Scirrotto and I attended the Arrow of Light Award Ceremony for Cub Scout Pack 7045. We presented Nathaniel Goff, Oliver Kenny, Joseph Tornese and Lilian Weber with township proclamations honoring each for the accomplishment of completing the requirements of the Arrow of Light Award. Each of these Cub Scouts have completed the four required adventures including Building a Better World, Duty to God in Action, Outdoor Adventurer and Scouting Adventure. The four Scouts attained the highest rank in Cub Scouting and also participated and demonstrated excellence in multidisciplinary Webelos activities. We are very proud of these young leaders and congratulate each for this great achievement.

The township committee held a special meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 3:00 p.m. at the township administration building. The sole purpose of this meeting was to introduce for eventual adoption an amendment to the Route 322 Rowan West Campus Regional Redevelopment Plan at the recommendation of the joint land use board. No other business was conducted at this meeting.

Corporal Stephen Wolfsgruber will be graduating from the canine academy with his partner, Tyson on Friday, March 1 at 11 a.m. The training academy is located at the Atlantic County Department of Law and Public Safety Police Training Center.  According to our Chief of Police, Darren White, “The training consists of a 16 week course covering all aspects of the patrol dog / handler team instruction. The subject matter includes obedience, agility, criminal apprehension, scent work and socialization.”

Chief White states that, “Cpl. Wolfsgruber has shown himself to be a knowledgeable, dependable, and hard-working officer since joining the force.  He was a solid choice for this position. Both Wolfsgruber and Tyson will be protecting Mantua and Wenonah to the best of their ability. If you see Tyson, please feel free to ask Cpl. Wolfsgruber if it’s okay to pet him and/or take pictures with him.”

The township will participate in tire amnesty week from Monday, March 18 through Friday, March 22. This program is designed to help our residents dispose of old tires.  Place old car or truck tires curbside during this week only (March 18 to March 22), and our public works department will pick-up the tires and transport the items to the GC Solid Waste Complex in South Harrison Township for disposal. A maximum of four tires is allowable per resident, and tires with rims or from semi-trucks or tractors are not acceptable and will not be picked-up by the township.

Upcoming Township Meetings and Events:

  • Rabies Clinic on Saturday, March 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at our Public Works Garage. Municipal offices will also be open during this time for pet licensing
  • Bulk Trash week is scheduled for Monday March 4 thru Friday, March 8.
  • Board of Health Meeting is Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m.
  • Fire District Meeting is Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at the Sewell Fire Station.
  • Historical Commission Meeting is Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at the historical museum.

On behalf of Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto, myself and the entire township committee, we look forward to continuing our service with honesty, integrity and trustful leadership.

Respectfully,

Mayor Robert T. Zimmerman, MAS
