The Deptford library will host a refresher course on study skills Tuesday Aug. 29 to help students prepare for the new school year.
The course will be held from 11 a.m. to noon and is intended for students in grades six to 12. Its instructor will be Reference Librarian Michelle Burns, a former high-school English teacher with 20 years of experience.
“I just wanted to give the students of this community a jump start on the new school year,” she noted. “All students going into middle school and high school are welcome to attend. One of the biggest things teachers struggle with in September is getting kids back into a school mindset from their summer vacations.
“In my experience,” Burns added, “teachers often don’t have time to teach study methods. They are concentrating on the curriculum and content of the course, so kids who want to learn and do well and get good grades might really not know how to get there.”
The course will focus on tips and tricks for organization and time management, issues that Burns explained “almost every student struggles with.” There will also be a quiz.
“Students who attend the class will also take a learning styles quiz that may help explain how each person learns,” she said, “and then I’ll offer specific study methods for each learning style. If I have time, I’ll also be touching on bullet journaling and how that can help keep students on top of all the things they have to remember and keep track of.”
Such methods are intended to help students keep their lockers and school calendars organized and find the best way to help retain and remember information learned in class. The course will mainly focus on these ideas, rather than focusing on one specific subject like ELA or math.
The event is free to attend and does not require a registration or Deptford library card. The course is also sponsored by the Deptford mayor and council.
