Mayor’s Message for week of Feb. 26

The old “Shop n Bag” space which is located at the Timberline Shopping Center is being completely gutted in order for the owner to market the property in a more attractive way. Work permits have now been submitted to the township. We have received no information regarding any potential new tenants.

Two avid disc golfers and Mantua Township residents, Jim Kiel and Jason Moore, have taken the initiative to design an 18-hole disc golf course to be constructed on an undeveloped 50-acre portion of the Chestnut Branch Park. Jim, a retired environmental engineer, has been a township resident for over 54 years and has been involved in township activities and sports for more than 45 years. Jason, a surveyor who specializes in drone surveys, is a relatively new township resident. The free course promises to be challenging while enjoying a walk-through nature. Construction of the course itself will begin in early June and should be ready by late September of this year. We want to thank Jim and Jason for their efforts, and for partnering with the township in order to build this new course for our community at our beautiful park.

On Friday, Feb. 24, Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto and I visited the United Methodist Church in Mantua to present township proclamations to members of Cub Scout Pack 7045 at their 2023 Arrow of Light Ceremony. Troop members John Geserick, Mason Gallagher, Olivia Jakubowicz, Sophia Jacubowicz, Michael Magilton, Matthew Henderson and Emma Rose McGuire-Valora were all scouts who successfully completed the necessary requirements to achieve the Arrow of Light Award. A huge thanks to Laura Romano and everyone else with Cub Scout Pack 7045 who helped make this celebratory night special. We are proud to support the pack, and we commend its members for their efforts and accomplishments.

Note: Cub Scout Pack 7045 would like to invite you to their Annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Mantua Masonic Lodge (adults $12.00 and kids 16 and under $7.00).

At a recent Gloucester County Mayors Association meeting, I was elected by the body as the vice president of the organization. This is a great opportunity for me and our community’s leadership to network, share information and work cohesively with other mayors and elected officials throughout the county so that we can all better serve our respective municipalities.

Upcoming Township Meetings and Events:

  • Historical Commission meeting will be held on Thursday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Norris Street School/Historical Museum.
  • The fire district meeting will be held on Thursday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sewell Fire Station on Union Avenue.
  • The Free Rabies Clinic will be held Saturday, March 4 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at our Public Works Garage.
  • The Board of Health meeting is Tuesday, March 7 at 7:00 PM at the municipal building.
  • Bulk Trash Pick-up is Monday, March 6 through Friday, March 10 on your normal trash day.

I’ve mentioned this previously, but it’s certainly worthy of another shout-out.  Our police department, public works department, clerk’s office and all other team members at the township building have continued to do a phenomenal job serving the public as those on the front-line, making our jobs easier as your local government officials. On behalf of the township committee, I’d also like to commend our department heads and especially our Township Administrator, Jennica Bileci for her leadership as we continue to move Mantua Township forward.

On behalf of myself, Deputy-Mayor Pete Scirrotto and the entire Township Committee, we look forward to serving you with honesty, integrity and trustful leadership.
