The township’s recreation advisory committee will host the annual trunk or treat on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Delran Community Park.
The event is open to all Delran residents, but online registration is required. One ticket per household is accepted and includes a reserved parking spot. Families are strongly encouraged to decorate their cars, along with the outside area surrounding their spot.
Trunk or treat will have contests for costumes and decorated trunks. In the former, there are age group categories: newborn to 3 years, 4 to 6, 7 to 10 and ages 10 and up.
“The fire department and emergency squad judge the contest, and winners will receive gift cards and a certificate,” event Chairman Colin Rafferty noted.
Rafferty also plans other community events, like the town-wide yard sale, National Night Out and the winter festival. He enjoys planning both big and small events in the township.
“The trunk or treat has been around for as long as I’ve been on the board, which is over six years,” he noted.
Rafferty also appreciates the trunk or treat’s inclusivity.
“It’s a safe place for kids to walk around, and the cars aren’t far from each other,” he explained. “All types of kids, especially those with disabilities and who may have trouble walking or trick or treating, can participate.”
The well-attended event will include a DJ playing Halloween music and helping emcee the festivities. But there is one rule at the trunk or treat.
“Once a car enters the park, they cannot leave until the event is over,” Rafferty pointed out. “This ensures the safety for everyone at the closed-down park, and allows the community to come together and celebrate Halloween.
“We want to bring out as many people as possible after the pandemic,” he added.
Trunk or treat hours are 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Gates will open at 2 p.m., and cars should be in position by 2:30. Children should arrive in Halloween costumes and be supervised by parents or guardians, who can also participate. Households must bring treats for approximately 300 children.
