Green Team’s costume swap can benefit the environment

Outfits collected at event can be reused to benefit sustainability

The Delran Green Team’s costume swap has continued to grow since it began three years ago, even through the pandemic.

The Delran Green Team’s sustainable costume swap returns Saturday for the collection of costumes in all shapes and sizes, for kids and adults, that will be given away to the community.

Green Team Committee member Karen Nowicki said the swap idea came about in 2019, when her daughter was only 3-and-a-half years old.

“My daughter loves costumes, but got little use out of them,” Nowicki said. “I thought it was a great idea to pass around costumes she’s grown out of and make them available to people. I love when a kid or parent finds something at the costume swap, because costumes bring out the joy in all of us.”

As a parent, the most important thing about the swap for Nowicki is for kids to pick out a costume they like and feel good about while helping the environment.

“Costumes can be reused in a way that helps make the world sustainable,” she added.

Nowicki noted how the event has continued to grow since it started three years ago, even  maintaining its popularity through the pandemic.

Residents can choose to keep the costumes or give them back after Halloween. The costume swap also includes accessories such as wigs, hats, masks and holiday-themed T-shirts.

“We start collecting the costumes after Halloween, and re-announce them at the end of September,” Nowicki explained.

The Green Team began taking dropoff donations on Sept. 21 and will continue until Saturday.

The costume swap will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jake’s Place Playground, at 12 Hartford Road. Residents can drop off costumes at the various locations in town, including the municipal building on 230 Paddock Way, 76 Stoneham Drive, 15 Ridgewood Ave., and 147 Beaverbrook Drive.
