Some ‘Hocus Pocus’ at Halloween drive-in

Movie night is a first for the township’s holiday celebration

The Harrison Township recreation commission will host its first Halloween drive-in movie with “Hocus Pocus 2” on Sept. 30 at Trinity United Methodist Church.

“This is the first time we’re doing a Halloween drive-in,” said Commission Coordinator Sharon Chew. “We use a 30-foot blow-up movie screen and people can drive up. The recreation commission votes on the movies. It’s never one person’s vote. Normally, with decisions, it’s majority rules, but something like this doesn’t need one.”

The lot opens at 6 p.m. and there will also be fire pits and snacks. While the event is free, attendees are encouraged to bring an item for donation to the local nonprofit   YPATT (Your Place at the Table), which provides food and other necessities like personal hygiene products to struggling individuals and families.

Requested items, according to the recreation commission’s Facebook page, are baby wipes, oatmeal, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant and shampoo or conditioner. Other donations will also be accepted.

YPATT’s website also lists needed items such as boxed pasta, canned chicken, applesauce, jelly (grape or strawberry), instant mashed potatoes, dry cereal (no Cheerios), dish soap and laundry detergent. Donations with glass will not be accepted.

The movie showing will mark the last drive-in event this year, but there will be more in 2023, with dates and times to be determined.

Now in its fourth year, the drive-in movie night is a successor to movies in the park that have been going on for the last 10 years. The commission started it to provide another family event for residents of Mullica Hill.

The drive-in movie event begins at 7:30 p.m.; rain date is Oct. 1. Stay tuned on the Harrison Township recreation commission’s Facebook page for more information and updates.
