The Parks and Recreation Department is happy to announce that youth summer camps are back — in a slightly more flexible format. The general summer camps for kindergarten through sixth grades will take place at Baker and Roberts Elementary Schools starting June 21. This year registration is for one week at a time. Each week’s camp will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include all the usual fun activities: games, arts and crafts and sports. Culinary and robotics classes are offered in the afternoons at the Recreation Center. The Baker and Roberts schools summer camps will run for six weeks, June 21 through July 26, the week of July 4th will only be Tuesday through Friday. Register for one or all six weeks.
‘Four is FUN’ and ‘Five is FUN-NER’ camps will be held for five weeks beginning June 28, the camp will run from 8:45 a.m. to noon at the Upper Elementary School. Monday through Thursday youngsters will learn, create and explore. Each week will incorporate a theme that will be woven into art projects, learning numbers and stories.
There are many week-long or four day camps to choose from — from sports to art to robotics. “Outdoor Games and Sports” will take place weekly Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jeff Young Park. Boys and girls will play a number of sports and games including soccer, tag and capture the flag. There are many culinary camps, some offered in the morning 9 a.m. to noon and some in the afternoon 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. There are many to choose from “Baking American Classics” (think mac ‘n cheese and chicken pot pies) to “European Desserts” (think éclairs and cream puffs). Freshly made items are always wrapped to take home and share.
A series of basketball mini-camps by grouped grades will are run from Mondays through Thursdays throughout the summer starting mid-July. There will also be a Summer Basketball League at Maple Dawson. Games will be played Monday-Wednesday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. for five weeks starting June 28. This is very fun, competitive team sport under the lights at the Maple Dawson basketball courts. Teams will be formed for girls in grades two to five and boys two to nine.
Robotics will be offered throughout the summer for three-hour sessions. Either in the morning 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or afternoon 2 to 5 p.m. Explore the vast world of technology : ‘3-D Printing’, ‘Animal Zoo Bots’, ‘Animation’, ‘Minecraft’, ‘Mars Mission’ or ‘Virtual Reality’.
Special Needs Summer camp will be held for ages 5 to 12 and 13 to 23 starting July 6 through July 30. Monday through Thursday the program begins at 12:15 to 5:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Get ready for bowling, arts and crafts and special events. This program will be staffed by Certified Special Needs Teacher, a nurse and Recreation staff.
Mini-art camps and the Summer Theatre camp will also be offered (more next week).
