New recycling carts on the way for residents

Press release from Shamong Township.

Blue recycling carts are coming to homes in Shamong Township later this month. The carts are funded through a partnership between the Shamong Township Committee and Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

The carts will be delivered to homes on existing curbside recycling routes, between Sept. 18 and 27, by the Occupational Training Center. The OTC operates the county’s recycling program and currently services carts at more than 130,000 homes in Burlington County. Carts help keep recyclables dry and secure on wet and windy days.

The carts will come with printed literature on “what, when and how to recycle” using the carts, and have a helpful “what to recycle” label printed on the lid.

Each home on the curbside routes will receive one 95-gallon cart, to fill with bottles, cans, paper and flattened cardboard boxes. Plastic bags are a serious contaminant in the recycling process and should never be put in recycling carts. Carts found with plastic bags will not be collected.

Residents should start using their cart as soon as they receive it and stop using their round recycling buckets. Recycling will still occur every other Tuesday, and the first “cart” collection will be on Oct. 1.

Please note that the Fawn Lake and Oak View mobile home communities will not receive carts and should continue using their round recycling buckets.

Families that are super recyclers and need a second cart may be able to request one from the township after Oct. 15. For details, call (609) 268-2377, ext. 304, or email [email protected]. The township recycling drop-off will still be available for residents to drop off overflow recyclables.

The Township does not want old recycling buckets back, and the trash hauler does not want them used as trash cans. Residents can mark them “trash” and Garden State Removal will dispose of them if they are set empty at the curb.

Residents who wish to recycle their old buckets may drop them off at the County Resource Recovery Complex, located at 22000 Columbus Road in Florence, NJ 08518. The complex is open Monday – Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to noon.

Please note, the recycling carts are township property and are tracked by a serial number.  They may only be used for recycling and it is illegal to remove recycling carts from their assigned address. For general information about recycling collections, contact the Recycling Hotline at (609) 267-6889.
