Voorhees Arts Council has big plans for May

The VAC launces a new program next month that hopes to catch the eyes of parents with children looking for ways to do art

The Voorhees Arts Council, located near the back of the food court in the Voorhees Town Center, is continuing to develop more exciting activities month after month for residents to partake in, both adults and children.

Upcoming in May, the Voorhees Arts Center has both new and recurring activities that it hopes are able to grab the attention of Voorhees and South Jersey residents.

In celebration of Mother’s Day later in the month, parents are able to drop off their children at the gallery the previous weekend, Saturday, May 4, where instructors will guide the children in creating a gift for mom.

Gifts will be made to surprise mom, and will be wrapped at the conclusion of the class. Space is limited and is $20 per child. Registration is required by calling or texting (609) 315-6218 to reserve a spot.

Another event catered toward parents is the new program “Drop In Pop Up Art for Youth” launching Tuesday, May 14 to begin a three-week program.

These drop-in sessions are from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m., where parents will be able to drop off their kids after school for an activity while parents can enjoy a date night during the week.

“The relationship we really want to cultivate is families that have kids that are active in sports, and those that are not can still have the opportunity to have an activity to express themselves with creativity,” said Marianne Leone, co-chair of the Voorhees Arts Center.

With athletic fields being close to the Voorhees Town Center, Leone hopes that eventually it can become commonplace for parents to drop children off for sports and art at the same time, and then enjoy an evening to themselves around town.

The program will have four stations with varying degrees of difficulty for new and expert painters, from coloring to painting and much more.

The drop-in program is not a class, so it does not require registration. The first three sessions are a test to see if there is interest in the community. Interested parents can contact Leone at (609) 315-6218 for more information regarding the drop-in program, which will cost $10.

The recurring Meet the Artists Reception will take place on Friday, May 17 at the Voorhees Town Center, and has not yet had a set theme yet for the month’s artwork submissions.

Meanwhile, the ongoing classes for the Voorhees Arts Center, such as the watercolor class and photography drop-in class are still ongoing on Fridays and Wednesdays, respectively.
