Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice to host Jewish aging workshop on April 28

The event will include discussions of various end-of-life issues and encourage dialogue between those practicing Judaism and those serving the Jewish community.

Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice will host “Embracing the Journey: Meaning, Hope and Caregiving” – a Jewish aging workshop on Sunday, April 28 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at The Samaritan Center at Voorhees.

This event is sponsored by Platt Memorial Chapels and is free and open to the public.

Along with Samaritan’s Jewish Hospice Advisory Committee, collaborators include Aleph Home Care, Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Southern New Jersey, Jewish Senior Housing, Jewish Sacred Aging, Katz JCC, Lions Gate and the Tri-County Board of Rabbis.

“The primary goal of Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice’s Embracing the Journey: Meaning, Hope and Caregiving workshop is to discuss various end-of-life issues and encourage healthy dialogue between those practicing Judaism and those serving the Jewish community” said Mary Ann Boccolini, president and CEO of Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice. “We want to encourage open discussions between family members, clergy and healthcare providers in order to normalize and facilitate end-of-life care discussions.”

Throughout the course of three hours, officials say this workshop will present a series of thought-provoking conversations on end-of-life care from the Jewish perspective.

The workshop will also feature a continental breakfast, tours of The Samaritan Center at Voorhees and an educational program highlighted by local senior service professionals.

Highlights of the event include:

  • “Exploring the Challenges of Care Giving” – presentation by Rabbi Richard Address, Jewish Sacred Aging – addressing legal and financial issues, stress of long-distance care giving, multi-generational care giving and other considerations of our Jewish traditions of honoring our mothers and fathers.
  • “Asking the right questions” – presentation by Rebecca Rosenau, LCSW, Samost Jewish Family & Children’s Service – providing tips on how to advocate for a loved one and navigate the caregiving process.
  • “Caught in the Middle: Juggling Time, Life, and Family” – presentation by Rabbi Richard Simon, Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice – offering ways to balance caretaker duties and fulfilling personal responsibilities.
  • A panel discussion on professional and family caregivers will follow the presentations.
  • A L’Chaim Concluding Ritual lead by Cantor Marlene Taenzer.

Registration for the workshop is required and available onsite the day-of the event, online at www.SamaritanNJ.org or by contacting Christine Corti of Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice at (856) 552-3258 or [email protected].
