At the Dec. 19 meeting, the Washington Township Board of Education recognized middle school and high school students for their dedication to newly implemented programs and projects, as well as bid farewell to Roy Dawson who’s term came to an end. Also, the board voted on WTPA investigation recommendations, while council voted on speed limits and solicitor duties.
Board of Education acknowledges notable educational programs, bids farewell to Roy Dawson
The Dec. 19 Board of Education meeting featured a variety of presentations and recognitions, as students from both Bunker Hill Middle School and Washington Township High School demonstrated projects and programs before the board. Student success was not the only acknowledgment of the night, however, as members of the board also honored Roy Dawson, whose position will be replaced in 2018, as he did not seek re-election in the fall.
Board of Education votes on WTPA contract investigation recommendations at meeting
The Washington Township Board of Education voted on recommendations provided by the Washington Township Principals Association Investigation Committee at the Dec. 19 meeting, following an extensive examination into a WTPA contract addendum from 2015. According to board member Roy Dawson, the addendum was added to the WTPA contract on Aug. 25, 2015, creating an additional lane column for a district assistant director position.
Council approves speed limit changes, increases township solicitor duties at meeting
At the Wednesday, Dec. 26, meeting, council voted to increase the speed limit on Salina Road, while also increasing the duties of Township Solicitor Stuart Platt to include legal counsel concerning township redevelopment. Council approved an ordinance 3–1 on second reading, changing the speed limit on Salina Road from 25 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour from the Deptford Township line to Egg Harbor Road. Also, council voted to increase the duties of Platt to include legal counsel in regard to redevelopment.
Woman dies after being pulled from Washington Township house fire
A 68-year-old woman suffered fatal injuries in a house fire on Tuesday, Dec. 26, at 1759 Congress Drive, Washington Township. The fire was reported at 4 p.m. When Washington Township first responders arrived at the seen, they observed “thick, black smoke, as well as flames,” coming from the home. According to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s office, Carol Nicosia was pronounced dead at Cooper Medical Center in Camden at 7:49 p.m.
