It was the first time the school had won the championship in 20 years.
The Medford Memorial Middle School Panthers baseball team won its first South Jersey Middle School Baseball League Championship in 20 seasons on Friday, June 9, 2017 in Moorestown, NJ. As a result, the school will have possession of the prestigious Simon Cup, the “holy grail” of the SJMSBL, for the next 12 months.
The Panthers shocked William Allen Middle School Quakers (Moorestown, NJ) 6–2 in the championship game. “Great pitching and defense led the way along with timely hitting,” said head coach Steve Fasolo
The SJMSBL consists of 16 teams in South Jersey of which eight earn playoff berths based on their record at the end of the regular season schedule.
Memorial earned the #6 seed in the playoffs, and defeated #3 seeded Rosa International Middle School (Cherry Hill, NJ) in the quarter-finals, #2 seeded Glen Landing Middle School (Blackwood, NJ) in the semi-finals, and #4 seeded William Allen Middle School (Moorestown, NJ) to earn the title. Memorial accomplished this while playing all three games on the road in the playoffs.
