Winners announced in CHAACA’s 2017 Black History Month Essay Poster and Video contest

Students were invited to create a poster, essay or video about an African-American in the arts born before 1960 in this year’s contest.

The Cherry Hill African American Civic Association has announced the winners of its 2017 Black History Month Essay Poster and Video contest.

In January, students from all grade levels in Cherry Hill Public Schools were invited to write an essay, make a poster or create a video depicting an African-American in the arts born before 1960.

This year’s winners are:

  • Nnemdi Tarrant, Kilmer Elementary, K-1st grade level, first place for video on Bernie Mac
  • Nathan Dekerlegand, Sharp Elementary, 2–3rd grade level, first place for poster on Michael Jackson
  • Allison Kang, Sharp Elementary, 2–3rd grade level, second place for poster on Katherine Dunham
  • Coltrane Benedict, Johnson Elementary, 2–3rd grade level, third place for poster on John Coltrane
  • Autumn Cherilien, Bret Harte Elementary, 2–3rd grade level, third place for video on Marian Anderson
  • Brandon Dekerlegand, Sharp Elementary, 4–5th grade level, first place for video on Duke Ellington
  • Evan Boxley, Sharp Elementary, 4–5th grade level, second place for essay on Louis Armstrong
  • Jillian Koenig, Woodcrest Elementary, 4–5th grade level, second place for essay on Debbie Allen
  • David Luca Petroiu, Bret Harte Elementary, 4–5th grade level, third place for poster on Frederick O’Neal
  • Kyra Washington, Barton Elementary, 4–5th grade level, third place for poster on Josephine Baker
  • Meryl Gideon, Beck Middle, 6–7th grade level, first place for essay on Maya Angelou
  • Brianna Schwartz, Rosa International Middle, 6–7th grade level, first place for poster on Samuel Wright
  • Sean Li, Rosa International Middle, 6–7th grade level, second place for essay on Michael Jackson
  • Harry Turner, Beck Middle, 6–7th grade level, second place for essay on Louis Armstrong
  • Alisha Fazal, Beck Middle, 6–7th grade level, third place for essay on Ella Fitzgerald
  • Kalise Green, Beck Middle, 6–7th grade level, third place for essay on Maya Angelou
  • Michela Anguadro, Rosa International Middle, 8–9th grade level, first place for poster on Faith Ringgold
  • Justina Lam, Rosa International Middle, 8–9th grade level, second place for essay on Louis Armstrong
  • Keva Singhal, Cherry Hill East, 8–9th grade level, third place for poster on Michael Jackson
  • Sally Johnston, Cherry Hill West, 10–11th grade level, first place for poster on Jean-Michael Basquiat

All winners are being honored at the Cherry Hill Board of Education meeting tomorrow night and during a reception at the Cherry Hill Public Library on Monday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. Members of the community can view the entries at the reception.
