As we move through October, I feel like I’m watching a scene from an “old-timey movie”- where the daily calendar pages are being torn in quick sequence and fluttering through into nothingness as leaves fall from trees, winter winds usher in snowflakes and spring blossoms bloom and suddenly we are a full year older and going through the next calendar year. However, while we are busy enjoying the fall foliage, the Department of Parks and Recreation is hard at work preparing for the Recreation Youth Basketball League.
Basketball registration is now open and closes on Friday, Dec. 9 in preparation for a short winter break, a quick return to school and game time in January. Register today at www.moorestownrec.com or www.moorestown.nj.us. Basketball is available to all Moorestown youth, starting with the Basketball clinic for first graders and the League for second through twelfth grade. This year, in an effort to give coaches and players plenty of notice registration will close on Friday, Dec. 9 with no guarantee of placement after that time. So, don’t delay! Register today!
Like all Recreation Programs, the success of the program relies on the support of volunteer coaches. This year, as you register Johnny and Susie for their respective teams, consider registering yourself as a volunteer coach. Anyone who had the “pleasure” of watching me coach last year knows that you don’t have to be proficient in the ways of basketball in order to coach. The Department needs coaches like you — coaches who care about kids, who want to be a part of something fun, who love to play and who want to make a difference. We hope this year you will decide to volunteer to coach in the Recreation Basketball League.
Coaching, you say? The Department of Parks and Recreation realizes that basketball may not be everyone’s “varsity” sport. Maybe you played in middle school of high school — maybe an intramural league in college — maybe a pick-up game on a Saturday with some work friends — or maybe only during physical education? No problem! This year, in an effort to help coaches develop practice agendas, skills and drills, the Department will offer a coaches clinic — two opportunities to come meet with other coaches and led by Mr. Basketball himself, Ted Flick, to get a better understanding of the game from a coaching perspective.
Before Tuesday, Dec. 9, visit www.moorestownrec.com or www.moorestown.nj.us to register to be a recreation basketball coach, simply follow the link on community pass to register. Please make sure all basketball registrations are complete by Tuesday, Dec. 9. Late registrations will carry a fee and team placement will not be guaranteed. We look forward to seeing you on the court!
