Free dog training classes upcoming for Camden County residents

The Camden County Freeholder Board, in partnership with the Animal Welfare Association (AWA), is offering a second season of their Well-Mannered Dog class for free to Camden County residents.

The Well-Mannered Dog is a one hour class that introduces dog owners to canine training methods, suggests tips to make training fun and easy, and covers the importance of why good manners matter.

“This class is great for dog owners,” Freeholder Jeffrey Nash said. “It creates a bond with their dogs while the owners learn training tips so their dogs are polite when out among other dogs and people. Enjoying the outdoors with your dog creates great memories.”

AWA’s instructors will lead the classes, and share their belief that every interaction one has with their dog teaches him or her something.

All training is positive and reward-based. The Well-Mannered Dog class is a way bond with a dog and get a leg-up on helping a dog become a very polite pooch.

“Lack of training or behavior problems that could be corrected are common reasons for surrendering dogs to shelters. Encouraging owners to engage in positive training helps dogs stay in their homes and out of the shelter system,” said Maya Richmond, AWA’s Executive Director.

The free workshops are being offered in Maria Barnaby Greenwald Park Cherry Hill on June 4, Sept. 17, and Oct. 8. There will be two sessions held on each of the days beginning at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

More information and registration can be found on AWA’s website at www.awanj.org/well-mannered-dog. All dogs must be over six months old, well-socialized, in good health and up-to-date on their shots, for the safety and well-being of both the humans and other dogs in the class.
