Evesham Police arrest Paterson man suspected of following UPS truck to steal packages

UPS

The following comes from Evesham Police Lt. Joseph Friel:

The Evesham Police Department arrested a suspect after it was discovered that he was following a UPS truck and picking up packages that were being delivered to Evesham homes as part of an identity theft and credit card scam.

On Sept. 4 at 4:35 p.m., the Evesham Police Department was contacted by an alert UPS driver who stated that he was delivering an abnormal amount of American Express Cards and believed that he was being followed by a suspicious male in a sports utility vehicle.

Officers responded to the area of Goldenrod Lane and located the vehicle described by the driver.

The driver gave officers conflicting stories of why he was in the area and why he was following the UPS truck.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle officers discovered stolen UPS packages (American Express Cards) addressed to residents in Evesham Township along with a sheet containing dozens of UPS tracking numbers.

The tracking numbers were set to be delivered to Evesham, Cherry Hill and Voorhees homes.

A follow up investigation determined that the suspect was able to compromise residents’ identities as part of a scam to fraudulently order credit cards. He then followed the UPS truck and picked up the packages from the homes they were delivered to.

This is an active criminal investigation and any additional victims are asked to contact the Evesham Police Department. All the tracking numbers were linked to victims and those victims were contacted by police.

Arrested:

A male, age 40, of Paterson, was charged with four counts of third degree credit card theft. He was lodged in the Burlington County Jail in default of $10,000 full bail.
