Moorestown receives sustainability certification

Moorestown Township has been awarded the Bronze Certification for its sustainability efforts in 2013 by Sustainable Jersey. The Bronze Certification indicates that Moorestown has made a commitment to sustainability and succeeded in implementing related programs and community outreach efforts.

“Our organization is proud to have attained the Bronze Certification through Sustainable Jersey,” said Cathy Ward, chair of Sustainable Moorestown. “This recognition is a result of the dedicated effort of our individual team members, as well as the group’s collaboration with other organizations in the community. Our team’s goal is to engage with a diverse group of township stakeholders through a variety of projects in order to promote the growth, health and vitality of Moorestown while protecting and enhancing the township’s environment for today and future generations. We look forward to using this achievement to energize new initiatives in the coming year.”

Founded in 2012, Sustainable Moorestown works within the community to promote, educate and engage township residents, small businesses and leadership on sustainability opportunities. In addition to offering educational resources on current sustainability issues through its website (www.sustainablemoorestown.org) and at a variety of events in town, Sustainable Moorestown recently worked with the township to conduct an energy audit of the Moorestown Recreation Building and to secure a grant for storm water management features at the new Moorestown Municipal Building. Throughout the year, Sustainable Moorestown also hosts a variety of events, such as movie nights, environmentally-focused activities and educational campaigns to provide an opportunity for town residents to learn about some of the small but important ways they can become more sustainable in their everyday lives.

Mayor Stacey Jordan was excited to hear the news and proud of the volunteers whose hard work enabled Moorestown to receive the Bronze Certification. “The hard work by this dedicated and passionate group of volunteers is greatly appreciated by the entire Town Council. It is people like the members of Sustainable Moorestown that make our community the special place that it is.”
Township Manager Scott Carew echoed the mayor’s sentiment. “This is a great achievement for Moorestown that the whole town should be proud of,” Carew said.
Sustainable Moorestown is a volunteer organization whose mission is to promote the social equity, economic vitality, and environmental quality of Moorestown, and act as an advisory committee for the town. Follow the group on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sustainablemoorestown.
