Opinion: Thanks for making Percheron Park fundraiser a success

Those of you who were on Main Street at Candlelight Night on Nov. 1 saw a sight unseen in Moorestown for more than 100 years…a team of Percheron horses pulling a wagon full of happy people. Thank you to the township and the MBA for helping to make this possible. The many people who made a donation to the park for a wagon ride helped make a success of this festive fundraiser for Percheron Park.

As many of you know, the Friends of Percheron Park, Inc. is a non-profit, 501©(3) organization that is raising funds from private donors to build Percheron Park at the township-owned site at Main and High streets. We are volunteers working to create an inviting spot on Main Street for residents and visitors to enjoy.

This privately funded park commemorates the introduction of the Percheron horse to the USA from France in 1839 by Edward Harris II, who lived at the Smith-Cadbury Mansion, just steps away at 12 High St. The Percheron horse became America’s predominate draft horse on farms and roads by 1930, attesting to Harris’ wisdom in importing these horses.

Although we have raised enough money to begin building the park in the spring of 2014 (when active remediation is done), we still need more funds to complete the park. We are working on additional fundraising plans. Don’t miss your opportunity to become part of Moorestown’s history — purchase a commemorative stone impression, and your name will be on display in the heart of town forever!

Thank you to the many businesses, organizations and people who have already showed their support for Percheron Park. Please stay tuned for our ongoing fund-raising efforts to make the park a reality. For more information, visit our website at www.pecheronpark.org. Donations may be made to Friends of Percheron Park and mailed to P.O. Box 153, Moorestown, NJ 08057.
