The M. Allan Vogelson Regional Branch Library of the Camden County Library System will host a screening and discussion about “Poet of Poverty” on Saturday, Sept 22 at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend this engaging, community event, which will consider important policy issues with local impact.
“Poet of Poverty” is a documentary film exploring the experience of poverty in the City of Camden through the writings of a resident Catholic priest, the Rev. Michael Doyle. Among other things, Doyle argues that Camden has, over time, become home to sewage, trash and scrap metal processing facilities and is generally used as a dumping ground by the surrounding suburban communities.
A post-screening discussion focused on the historical, cultural and ethical themes and the questions raised by the film will follow, facilitated by Dr. Chaone Mallory, assistant professor of philosophy at Villanova University.
As a participant in Face to Face: Community Conversations, a program of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH), a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Voorhees library will be able to offer this event at no cost to participants.
