Burlington County has the fourth-highest recycling rate in the state, and Evesham Township is well above the municipal average, according to Ann Moore, Burlington County Recycling Coordinator.
The township and county are looking at several new initiatives to help raise the recycling rate even higher, she said.
In 2008, Moore said the county collected 5,029 tons of recyclable materials from Evesham single and multi-family homes and schools. That does not include the amount of materials collected from businesses in the township, Moore said.
If those 5,029 tons had not been recycled, Moore said it would have cost the township $340,000 in landfill tipping fees.
The township is planning to expand its cart program, she said, to an additional 1,000 homes in hopes of boosting its recycling rate even higher.
